Deburring Drawing Note: Quote Edges That Matter

CNC-machined aluminum parts for a deburring drawing note review
Functional edges need measurable limits before machining begins.

A deburring drawing note should define a measurable edge condition, identify the functional edges, and state exceptions that the STEP model cannot show. Use a burr height tolerance, an edge-break size, or a radius limit. Then tell the shop how to inspect it. “Deburr all edges” is a cleanup instruction, not a quote-ready requirement.

At CNC Instant Quote, the missing step is reconciliation: compare the drawing note with the uploaded STEP geometry, separate general cleanup from edges that affect assembly, and price the specified inspection. Upload both through Instant Quote for CNC milling or turning in aluminum, copper, brass, steel, and plastics.

What should a deburring drawing note measure?

A deburring drawing note should specify burr height, edge-break size, or maximum radius. Ruijin CNC gives practical examples: burr height 0.05 mm maximum on a non-mating face, a 0.2 × 45° edge break, or R0.1 maximum. Each option gives inspection a number instead of an opinion.

Burr height tolerance0.05 mm maximum on the non-mating faceA small residual burr is acceptableMicroscope or edge comparator

Maximum radiusR0.1 maximumA rounded edge is acceptableRadius gauge or microscope

KGL explains that edge breaks such as 0.2 mm maximum or C0.5 affect assembly, sealing, and inspection. The larger the permitted break, the more material the process may remove. Put the limit beside the feature when the edge is functional.

How do you separate general cleanup from functional edges?

Treat each edge as either general cleanup or functional. General cleanup can use a global maximum. Functional edges need an identifier, a limit, an exception, and an inspection method.

  1. List the features that can affect assembly—datums, seal faces, bore entrances, threads, slot ends, and thin lips. Failure mode—an oversized break removes sealing land or changes the entry geometry.
  2. Mark the four or five edges that matter on the drawing. Failure mode—a global note makes the shop treat 196 harmless edges like four critical ones.
  3. Assign a numeric condition to each marked edge. Failure mode—a chamfer added to a minimum slot or bore can consume its dimensional tolerance.
  4. Overlay the drawing callouts against the STEP model before fixing the quote. Failure mode—the drawing may call out an edge that is absent in the model, or the model may contain a sharp edge the drawing does not address.

This separation also prevents avoidable design changes. If thin walls, blind bores, or inaccessible corners already create risk, the related guidance in CNC Machining Design Mistakes Cost You More Than You Think is the next useful review.

How should an edge break callout protect assembly features?

An edge break callout must show where material may be removed and where it may not. For a bore with an h7 clearance fit, specify the mouth treatment separately from the bore size so deburring does not enlarge the entrance.

One failure example is an oversized break that removes the sealing land around a bore. The seal then loses contact even though the nominal bore remains within size. The same edge treatment can enlarge a bore entrance or shorten a slot when it consumes the available dimensional tolerance.

  • Datums—state “no edge break” on the contact edge unless the datum scheme allows one.
  • Seal faces—protect the sealing land; define any lead-in chamfer separately.
  • Threads—exclude thread flanks and specify only the thread-mouth treatment if needed.
  • Thin lips—use a small maximum, such as 0.05 mm, or prohibit the break where wall thickness is critical.

What do ISO 13715 edge symbols tell you?

ISO 13715:2000 provides vocabulary for undefined edges, including burr direction, edge size, and drawing indications. Sections 4.4–4.6 are useful when interpreting ISO 13715 edge symbols. The ISO page marks this edition withdrawn, so your current contract standard must control.

Use the standard as a shared language, not as permission to infer an unstated limit. If your customer specification names a newer revision or another contract standard, place that reference on the drawing and use its definitions during inspection.

What does a quote review actually verify?

A quote review should return two decisions: what the general note covers, and which functional edges receive a numeric limit and inspection method. The STEP model controls where geometry exists. The drawing controls the required edge condition. If they disagree, flag the mismatch before pricing.

Quote inputEdge requirementsInspection result
“Deburr and break all edges”No measurable global limit; functional edges are unidentifiedClarification required before a fixed edge-treatment allowance
Four identified functional edgesE1: 0.2 × 45° maximum; E2: R0.1 maximum; E3: burr 0.05 mm maximum on non-mating face; E4: no break at datumAn anonymized review measured E1 at 0.18 mm, E2 at 0.08 mm radius, E3 at 0.03 mm burr height, and no material removal at E4

That review changes the quote because the shop can plan a controlled toolpath and targeted inspection instead of open-ended manual cleanup. A sheet-like perimeter may suit a router, while a deep pocket around a bore needs a mill; CNC Router vs Mill: Choose from Your CAD covers that access decision.

Keep edge work separate from unrelated cost changes. If material, freight, or trade inputs affect the quote, see CNC Machining Tariffs 2026: Why Your Quote Costs More rather than hiding those changes inside a vague deburring allowance.

A controlled toolpath makes a numeric edge requirement easier to repeat and inspect.

What should you send with the STEP file?

Send the STEP model with a drawing that isolates edge requirements. The quote can then separate ordinary cleanup from operations that affect fit, sealing, or inspection.

  • A global cleanup limit for non-functional edges.
  • A marked view or edge ID for every functional edge.
  • The numeric condition—burr height, edge break, or radius.
  • Exceptions for datums, seal faces, threads, and thin lips.
  • The inspection method, such as microscope, gauge, or optical comparator.
  • A note identifying which document controls if the drawing and STEP model disagree.

Deburring drawing note FAQ

Can you use a global deburring note?

Yes, for general cleanup only. Add a measurable maximum and list the functional edges separately.

Which is clearer: burr height or edge break?

Use burr height when residual material is acceptable. Use an edge break or radius when the amount of material removed affects assembly.

What happens if the drawing and STEP model disagree?

Hold the quote for clarification. Do not infer a chamfer, radius, or allowable burr from the model alone.

How do you make the note quote-ready?

Name the functional edges, assign measurable limits, protect the exceptions, and reconcile the drawing with the STEP geometry before release. If you need a CNC machining shop to review the requirement with the quote, send the drawing and model together. →
