CNC Quote STEP File: What to Upload

A STEP model shows the shape; the supporting notes define how the part must be made and checked.

Your CNC quote STEP file defines the part’s 3D shape. It does not define every decision needed to manufacture and inspect that part. The gap matters when a bore needs a position tolerance, when aluminum means 6061-T6 instead of 7075-T6, or when a black finish means anodizing rather than paint.

I’m Ashkan, a CNC engineer at CNC Instant Quote. I use the upload package to separate visible geometry from manufacturing intent. This guide shows what to include before you request an instant quote, so your model starts engineering review with fewer assumptions.

The model supplies geometry while the drawing and notes supply the acceptance criteria.

What the CNC quote STEP file defines

Geometry is only one half of the request

A solid STEP model gives an engineer the part envelope, surfaces, holes, pockets, threads, bosses, and other modeled features. It supports a geometry-based review for CNC milling or turning. Our service covers aluminum, copper, brass, steel, and plastics quoted from CAD geometry.

The model usually cannot tell us which surfaces are functionally critical. It may not identify a datum scheme, a required 0.05 mm position tolerance, a 1.6 µm Ra finish, or a surface that must remain masked during anodizing. Those instructions belong in a drawing or written note.

Manufacturing intent closes the gaps

Treat the STEP file as the shape authority and the drawing as the requirement authority. If the two conflict, quoting should pause until you identify the current revision. Do not expect color, layer names, or a filename to communicate an acceptance requirement.

PREMSA’s June 2026 quoting guide reports that the CAD file can account for more than 50% of analysis time. It also identifies dirty models, crossed revisions, missing material, and unclear requirements as reasons a review stops. That is why a clean model still needs manufacturing context.

The minimum package for a CNC quote

For a complete CNC quote, send the current STEP file with the information below. Each item answers a different engineering question. Omitting one may leave the geometry review intact but prevent a firm scope.

  1. Current STEP file — use the revision that represents the part you intend to buy.
  2. Material grade and condition — specify 6061-T6, 7075-T6, C101 copper, C110 copper, 304 stainless steel, or the exact plastic grade when relevant.
  3. Quantity and project stage — state whether you need 1 prototype, 20 validation parts, or 500 production parts.
  4. Critical dimensions or GD&T — identify functional sizes, datums, hole positions, flatness, perpendicularity, and any limit tighter than the general tolerance.
  5. Finish — state as-machined, anodizing type and color, passivation, polishing, plating, or a roughness target such as Ra 3.2 µm.
  6. Inspection or certification requirements — list inspection reports, material certificates, certificates of conformity, or other documents required at delivery.

A drawing is not mandatory for every simple part. It becomes necessary when the model cannot express the acceptance rule. A turned spacer with a single diameter tolerance may need only a clear note. A machined housing with datums, seal faces, and controlled bores usually needs a 2D drawing for CNC machining quote.

Material family is not enough

Aluminum is not a complete material callout. 6061-T6 and 7075-T6 differ in strength, cost, availability, and machining behavior. Copper also needs a grade such as C101 or C110 when conductivity or forming history matters. The same principle applies to acetal, PEEK, nylon, and other plastics.

CNC quote drawing requirements that close the gap

Use the drawing to state what the finished part must prove. Mark the critical dimensions instead of covering every edge with tight tolerances. Include datums when relationships matter. Add thread callouts, surface-finish symbols, material condition, and any post-machining operation.

For example, a bearing plate might require a 25.000 mm bore, 0.02 mm flatness on the mounting face, and a 0.05 mm position tolerance relative to two bolt-hole datums. The STEP file shows those features. The drawing tells us which relationships control function.

Great Material’s June FAQ groups the recurring buyer questions around files, revisions, notes, tolerances, material, quantity, finish, and inspection documentation. That grouping matches what we see in quote intake. A missing note can affect inspection planning just as much as a missing dimension.

Make revision control visible

Name the model and drawing with the same revision, or state which file governs. If revision B changes a 10 mm hole to 12 mm, do not leave revision A in the upload folder. Mixed files create an engineering question before they create a price.

State the acceptance evidence

If you need a dimensional inspection report, say so before quoting. If the material must include a certificate, include that requirement with the grade. Inspection adds planning and documentation work, even when the machining cycle remains unchanged.

Our upload workflow and a review that changed

At CNC Instant Quote, you can submit the STEP file with a PDF drawing or written specifications. The required quote fields are material grade, quantity, and finish. Add critical tolerances, inspection documents, and certification needs whenever they apply. If a field does not apply, state that clearly instead of leaving the reviewer to guess.

The upload begins with geometry. Engineering review then checks whether the stated material, tolerance, finish, and quantity describe the same part. This is the practical meaning of a STEP file for CNC quote: the model starts the review, while the surrounding fields define the job.

One anonymized example involved a valve bracket uploaded with a complete STEP model and the material listed only as steel. The geometry looked suitable for a standard milled part. When the customer confirmed 17-4 PH H900, the review changed to include material condition, stock availability, and hardness-related inspection. The missing grade did not alter the shape. It altered the manufacturing and quality plan.

Penta’s 2026 benchmark page lists missing STEP files, incomplete drawings, unclear tolerances, and late documentation as common sources of avoidable delay. Uploading the package together keeps those questions inside the first review.

CNC quote STEP file FAQ

Can I request a quote with only a STEP file?

You can start geometry review with only a STEP file, but a complete quote needs material grade, quantity, finish, and applicable tolerance or inspection requirements. Missing intent may lead to clarification.

Do I always need a 2D drawing?

No. A simple part with standard tolerances may not need one. Use a drawing when you need GD&T, critical dimensions, surface-finish control, masking, threads, or inspection records.

What if the STEP file and drawing disagree?

Identify the governing revision before quoting. If the conflict affects a hole, interface, material, tolerance, or finish, engineering should not price from an assumption.

Where can I check other upload questions?

Review the CNC machining FAQ for common questions about files, materials, finishes, quantities, and quality documents.

Send manufacturing intent with your geometry

A current STEP file gives us the part’s shape. Your material grade, quantity, critical requirements, finish, and inspection notes define what we must deliver. Check those items before upload, then send the complete package through the CNC Instant Quote upload page
