Machining Quote Validity: What Holds and What Changes
Published 2026-10-24 · Machining Guides
Machining quote validity tells you how long a CAD-based price can be accepted without a fresh commercial check. A clear quote states its timestamp, expiration date, material basis, and re-quote trigger. After expiry, the geometry, quantity, and programming assumptions may remain fixed while stock price, temper availability, and machine capacity are checked again.
That distinction is the useful answer at the quote stage. I’m Ashkan, CNC engineer at CNC Instant Quote, and I focus here on what stays locked after machining quote expiration and what must be rechecked before you send a purchase order.

What does machining quote validity actually hold?
Machining quote validity covers acceptance of the priced assumptions during a stated window. It does not freeze every upstream input indefinitely. CNC Instant Quote timestamps an instant estimate when you upload CAD, then associates the price with the quoted file, material, form, quantity, process assumptions, and validity end time.
The guide CNC Machining RFQ: What to Send, Ask, and Compare from Industrial Web Search makes the practical point that validity must be stated because material prices move. Without a date, you cannot tell whether a price is current or simply unchallenged.
The timestamp also protects the assumptions that should not move without a reason. If the same STEP revision, quoted quantity, and machining route are still requested, you should not treat an expired quote as a brand-new geometry review. Before changing the model, use CNC Machining Design Mistakes Cost You More Than You Think to check whether the design itself creates avoidable cost.
Why are material and tooling windows different?
Material price validity and tooling price validity measure different commitments. A finished-part quote may cover a longer commercial window, while an upstream input can move sooner. Treating those windows as interchangeable creates false certainty.
TrueNorth Engineering publishes a concrete example: its quotes are valid for 14 days, with the price held unless raw material moves more than 10 percent. JPT’s first-hand discussion of cutting-tool material costs gives a shorter example, noting that some upstream tool-material quotes are valid for five days or less.
Those numbers describe different supply decisions. A 6061-T6 plate part may keep the same CAD geometry, quantity, and programming assumptions while its stock price, temper availability, or machine capacity needs checking. Cadvex’s cost-driver guide treats material and tooling as separate inputs for the same reason.
A five-day upstream input window does not automatically cancel a finished-part estimate on day six. It tells engineering which line needs evidence first. If your order also raises a separate trade-cost question, CNC Machining Tariffs 2026: Why Your Quote Costs More covers that subject separately.
Which assumptions stay locked after expiry?
After expiry, unchanged CAD and process inputs can remain locked for comparison, but volatile commercial inputs need rechecking. The table shows the boundary CNC Instant Quote uses when reviewing an old estimate.
| Assumption | Locked if unchanged | Rechecked after expiry | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| STEP geometry and revision | Same file and revision remain the geometry basis | Confirm file identity only if a new upload or revision appears | The purchase order references the quoted CAD |
| Quoted quantity | The requested quantity matches the estimate | Confirm the order still matches the quoted quantity | The buyer orders the same run size |
| Programming and fixture assumptions | The same access, holding, and machining route still apply | Engineering confirms no new process constraint is present | The part and manufacturing route are unchanged |
| Material grade and form | The specification remains 6061-T6 aluminum plate, for example | Check stock availability, thickness, temper, and certification basis | The grade and form are mandatory |
| Material price basis | Held only through the stated validity window | Compare current replacement stock against the quoted USD/kg basis | The quote has passed its expiration date |
| Capacity assumption | Not guaranteed indefinitely | Check the available machine slot and expected lead time | The purchase order arrives after expiry |

How should an expired quote be rechecked?
An expired quote needs a short engineering and commercial review before it is honored. The review should preserve unchanged CAD assumptions, then verify the inputs most likely to move.
Worked internal example
Use this internal example to make the record measurable. Quote timestamp: October 24, 2026 at 14:32 Central Time. Expiration: November 7, 2026 at 23:59 Central Time. Material: 6061-T6 aluminum plate, 12 mm thick. Material basis: $6.40/kg. Quantity: 8 parts. The precise re-quote trigger is replacement stock for the same grade and form above $7.04/kg, because that exceeds the agreed 10 percent movement. This illustrates the method, not a blanket CNC Instant Quote policy.
Suppose the purchase order arrives on November 11. The original stock is unavailable, or the current material line is $7.05/kg. The CAD file still matches, but the old price has crossed its validity boundary. Engineering must confirm the grade, form, temper, current stock basis, and capacity before honoring the old number or issuing a revised one.
- Read the quote timestamp and expiration date. Failure mode: accepting an expired number because the PDF or email is still easy to find.
- Match the STEP revision, quantity, and process assumptions. Failure mode: changing the commercial basis without identifying a real change in the requested part.
- Check current stock availability, grade, form, temper, USD/kg basis, and machine capacity. Failure mode: applying an old material assumption to unavailable stock.
- Apply the documented quote surcharge trigger and record the result. Failure mode: allowing the purchase order and the engineering record to carry different prices or validity dates.

Machining quote validity FAQ
How long should a machining quote be valid?
There is no universal window. The validity period must be stated beside the price. TrueNorth Engineering publishes 14 days with a raw-material movement condition, but that is TrueNorth’s policy, not CNC Instant Quote’s.
Does quote expiration mean the CAD geometry must be reviewed again?
No. If the STEP revision, quantity, and process assumptions match, those inputs can remain stable. Engineering still checks material availability, temper, current price basis, capacity, and any new order condition before honoring the old estimate.
What is a quote surcharge trigger?
A quote surcharge trigger is the precise condition that forces repricing, such as replacement 6061-T6 plate exceeding the agreed USD/kg movement. Write the threshold as a number and identify the material form it applies to.
What should you do before sending the PO?
Check the quote timestamp before you treat the price as current. If the estimate is still valid, send the purchase order against that record. If it has expired, request the material and capacity recheck before relying on the old number.
