CNC Online Quote Material Certificates: 2.1 vs 3.1
Published 2026-09-22 · updated 2026-09-23 · Materials
CNC online quote material certificates are documents that trace the alloy and heat or batch used for your part. Choose 2.1 for a supplier declaration, 2.2 for a declaration with test results, or 3.1 for specific heat results. None proves every finished dimension is within tolerance.
The choice belongs in your quote before production starts. Ashkan, CNC engineer at CNC Instant Quote, uses the document type to prevent a common failure: receiving compliant material paperwork after the order, but discovering the required certificate was never priced or requested.

What do CNC online quote material certificates prove?
A material certificate supports alloy identity and heat or batch traceability. It can document chemical composition and mechanical values tied to the supplied material. It does not prove that a finished hole, pocket, or flatness callout meets the drawing.
Weerg identifies its material certification with EN 10204:2004 and describes confirmation of chemical composition and mechanical properties. 1TurnAhead lists document types 2.1, 2.2, and 3.1 on request. MakerVerse’s July 22, 2026 comparison found that quoting platforms expose different choices, including EN 10204 material certificates, certificates of conformity, RoHS/REACH records, and inspection reports.
Treat a certificate and a dimensional report as separate deliverables. If a bore is 10.00 ±0.02 mm, the material certificate cannot prove that 9.98–10.02 mm requirement.

Which EN 10204 certificate should you choose?
Choose the lowest document level that satisfies your customer, quality plan, or regulated application. The main difference is whether the document contains general information or test results tied to the specific heat.
| Document | Who issues it | Are test results included? | Request it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.1 | The manufacturer or supplier | No. It is a declaration of compliance with the order. | You need a basic declaration for a prototype or internal build. |
| 2.2 | The manufacturer or supplier | Yes, but results are non-specific and are not necessarily from the exact supplied heat. | You need representative results and your customer accepts non-specific data. |
| 3.1 | The manufacturer, with an authorized inspection representative independent of production | Yes. Results are specific to the supplied heat or batch. | You need heat-specific traceability, contractual compliance, or controlled production records. |
The 2.1 vs 3.1 certificate decision is not a quality ranking. It is a traceability decision. A 3.1 document gives stronger evidence for the exact heat, but it can require records that are unavailable after stock is cut.
When do certificate choices change price or lead time?
Certification can add cost, lead time, or both because the supplier may need heat-specific records and additional document control. Select the document before the quote is issued so the price and promised date include that work.
In the CNC Instant Quote workflow, the material-certification choices are shown as 2.1, 2.2, and 3.1 where available for the selected material. The quote displays any price or delivery change before you order. The exact delta depends on the alloy, stock source, quantity, and required document.
- Enter the exact material and condition, such as AL6061-T6 rather than generic aluminum. Failure mode: the supplier prices the wrong stock condition or cannot match the certificate later.
- Select 2.1, 2.2, or 3.1 before checkout. Failure mode: an email request after ordering becomes a reprice or production hold.
- Review the quoted total and delivery date after selecting certification. Failure mode: you approve a low price without noticing that the required document is excluded.
- Carry the certificate requirement into the purchase order and drawing package. Failure mode: the certificate exists, but purchasing cannot match it to the part shipment.
CNC Instant Quote covers CNC milling and turning capabilities in aluminum, copper, brass, steel, and plastics. If your drawing also includes threaded features, settle those requirements before ordering with CNC online quote thread specifications.

What should you put on the quote for each material?
Put the exact grade and temper on the quote, then add the certificate level. A short note such as “AL6061-T6, 3.1 certificate required” gives purchasing and production a usable requirement.
- AL6061-T6 — specify the 6061 alloy and T6 temper. Request 2.1 for basic traceability or 3.1 when the customer requires heat-specific chemistry and mechanical values.
- C101 copper — write C101, not only copper. Request the certificate when copper purity or batch traceability must be documented.
- 304 stainless — write 304 stainless steel, not only stainless. Select 2.2 when representative results are accepted, or 3.1 when the contract requires results for the supplied heat.
A CNC quote material cert should identify the part or order, material grade, heat number, and document type. The record should be traceable to the shipped parts, not just to a material family.

FAQ: Which certificate belongs on your quote?
Does a material certificate prove my part dimensions?
No. It supports material identity and traceability. A 10.00 ±0.02 mm bore still needs the applicable dimensional verification.
Is 3.1 always the best certificate?
No. Use 3.1 when you need results tied to the supplied heat or a contract requires it. Use 2.1 or 2.2 when their evidence level is accepted.
Can I request certification after ordering?
You can ask, but the document may add cost or delay if the material heat has already been consumed or the record was not reserved. Request it before the quote is issued.
How should you request certification before ordering?
Write the requirement in one line: exact grade and condition, EN 10204 document type, and any dimensional report requirement. For example: “C101 copper, 3.1 material certificate, heat number traceable to order.” This removes the ambiguity that selectable extras often leave unresolved.
